Stable Fluids

#rys00f2f

A tank of clear water with ink dropped into it, run as an actual fluid simulation rather than a picture of one. Six passes: velocity is advected through itself, forced by the emitters and by the stirrer, given back the curl that advection steals (vorticity confinement), then made incompressible by a damped Jacobi pressure solve before it is allowed to carry any dye. The plumes, the mushroom caps, the shed vortex pairs and the long thin filaments are all things the solver does -- not noise faded in and out to look like smoke. Turn the pressure solve off and the ink collapses into a flat structureless smear, which is the honest test of whether one is really running. Nothing here waits to be touched: the emitters move on their own and the stirrer is a vortex that roams the tank on a figure of eight, so it keeps churning by itself. STIR sets the middle of that beat and WANDER sets how far it strays, down to nought if you would rather it stayed put. EMIT chooses where the ink comes from: fountains along the floor, rain from the ceiling, orbit, collide, ring, wander, or still if you want nothing in the tank but the stirrer. STYLE chooses how the tank is photographed -- ink in water, glow, schlieren, vorticity, speed, thermal, chrome, oil film, neon, marbling, aurora, x-ray, nebula, wet paper, contour and streamlines -- and the last one, divergence, shows the solver grading itself: red where the flow is compressing, blue where it is expanding, and near black everywhere the pressure solve has done its job.

export clip · render a video in your browser

Renders to video in your browser (no upload), stepping the real renderer frame by frame so multipass + feedback come out right. motion auto-animates the shader's own knobs — each export rolls a fresh take (🎲 re-roll, 🔒 to pin one you like). GIF is slower with a tighter length cap; MP4/WebM are faster. Some devices record in real time (noted below if so) — keep the tab visible.
